Issues

Dave's goals for the Town continue to be:

  • Keep taxes low
  • Provide outstanding service to Town residents
  • Protect residents' liberty, privacy and property rights

Keep taxes low. In 2021 Dave led the fight to prevent an 18% tax increase. Dave successfully negotiated elimination of bank fees saving the Town thousands of dollars per year since 2014. He proposed, researched and implemented the Town's Treasuries program earning the Town over $10,000 in 2018. Dave voted against the small tax increase in 2016 and pushed to lower taxes in 2018. Dave has helped protect Poestenkill residents from significant tax increases by defeating wasteful projects like the $60,000 plus acquisition of the building for the Historical Society which later agreed to a $1 per year arrangement with the Evangelical Lutheran Church for their current home (where they are very happy and have built the beautiful Heritage Center). In 2016 Dave conducted a 10 year analysis of Town budgets and found that budgets consistently exceeded expenditures. This lead to reducing budgets for many departments without lowering actual expenditures. This process kept the tax increase in 2016 down without affecting Town services. Low taxes are essential to economic growth. By keeping taxes low, the Town Board can encourage growth by keeping Poestenkill cost-competitive with other towns in the area. Economic growth is essential to keeping home resale values high.

Provide outstanding service. The Town of Poestenkill offers residents excellent service in road and highway maintenance, basic services of the Town Clerk's office, and efficient and fair hearings at the Planning and Zoning Boards. Dave will help to continue this legacy of excellence and try to improve it on a continuous basis. Dave's participation in the Stormwater Drainige District Law, and in the Lot Line Adjustment laws helped create sensible regulations while protecting property owner's rights.

Protect rights. Dave is a strong advocate of property owner's rights. In 2021, Dave is fighting proposals to fine and/or jail homeowners if they don't maintain vacant properties to one Councilmans personal standards. Dave also supported the 2020 law permitting residents to cut wood without town regulations. In 2018, Dave fought for and convinced the Board to permit ownership of chickens without requiring a special use permit. Dave will look to remove other laws that unnecessarily restrict our rights. Dave fought for and won changes in the Town's water law removing the requirement that residents in the water district had to connect to the municipal water supply. It is now their rightful choice. On the Planning Board, Dave's strong voice prevented approval of regulations which would unfairly take land from property owners without compensation. The final recommendations strictly follow NY State guidelines requiring property owners to help the Town expand any existing parks to meet the needs of the additional people moving into the town.

Prior to being a Councilman, Dave successfully petitioned the Town Board to pass a resolution condemning the new NY SAFE Act which violates residents Second Amendment rights and limits personal freedom.
